Potato Update

Well the potatoes have been popping up...

When they come out of the ground you cover then with more of Mel's mix....

Hubby decided to build a box for them...  it made it easier to cover them...

He filled the box with dirt...but it didn't take long for the potatoes to come thru...

They are now at the point that we will just let them grow and flower....

and see how many potatoes we get from a 4x4 box...with 32 hills!!...

Last count all but 3 had sprouted.

Next update at harvest....

Square Foot Gardening Update...

The garden has been in just about a month. Our weather has been cool, rainy with the odd day of heat and sun....

So I'll start with the bad news... A few plants have frost damage...

 My beans....and my cucumbers.... I'm hoping they will come back!!

All the other squares are coming along quite nicely...

The flowers were bedding out plants... I can't take credit for them...
the only seeds that did not come up....was the lettuce seeds from YUMA....but I'm sure they don't know what to do with our weather up here!!

We added gravel 'paths' between our boxes...

I planted the empty squares for later harvest...since you use very few seeds for this garden...the seeds are put away in the fridge for next year.

We tried a radish.... in about one more week I think they will be the perfect size....

Well that is about it for our garden update...

Planting Potatoes....

Hubby insisted that he wanted to plant potatoes..... We didn't plan a square box for potatoes...but he improvised....

He dug up a 4 foot square...added peat moss to the soil... and then followed the directions from our book for the potatoes...

Well it says....two holes in every 12 inches..
We added some of 'Mel's soil to every hole...

Then you cover the potatoes with the soil mix...but just cover it adding soil as they start to grow...

Well time will only tell what becomes..or not of this 4 x 4 area of potatoes....

Gardening.... First Step..

This is the first year in our new yard...we both love to garden!
I bought the book Square Food Gardening and this year we will see how this type of gardening goes...

 

Instead of a railing around our deck, hubby build raised boxes for my garden...as well he build the 4 x 4 boxes. We do have an area for our garden...but the nice thing about this type of gardening... you can put the boxes any where in your yard!

We bought our 'soil' ingredients....Vermiculite, compost, and peat moss!

 

Then the fun part comes of mixing these all together... AND I did help mix....but I had to take the pictures:)

Then we filled the boxes with the dirt...

 Added the square foot grids..

Planted our seeds...
