The PJ's are done!

My second Quilt for Kids quilt top is done...

Okay....the pattern did not turn out the way the instructions said... I'll be honest... I have to be shown how to do things...reading how to do them...just doesn't work for me...BUT it's done...I don't think anyone will notice?? After I finished it ... I woke up the next morning and realized what I was suppose to do....so maybe I need to sleep on the instructions after I read them...before I do it:)

T-Shirt Quilt...

A few years back I had heard about the T-Shirt Quilt....
I thought they would make nice keepsakes.
My grandma had made me a quilt out of scraps of clothing.... when my granddaughter saw it and I told her about the different cloths and what they use to be...she asked if I would make her a quilt like that....
I thought the t-shirt quilt would be a great memory quilt for the boys...
I was given some 'special shirts' to make one up

I looked online to see the "how to's.... and proceeded to cut the T'shirts apart. 

I ironed on a light weight interfacing to keep the knit from stretching...

We went with an informal pattern...so the squares were laid out and scraps of t-shirt were used to fill in missing holes in the quilt. Then all the pieces were sewn together.

The 'quilt' was wanted for more of a throw so a lightweight cordury backing was used without any batting.

Matching binding was sewing on.

Recyled Leg warmers...

I have a bag of old sweaters that I use for a variety of projects using the 'body' of the sweater. 

But what do you do with the sleeves... 

How about a pair of leg warmers?

First you cut the sleeves off the sweater...

Then you need to square the top...

Cut two pieces of elastic that fit around the calf of you leg at the height of the leg warmer. Zig Zag the elastic together.
Put the elastic on the wrong side of the 'sweater'..

I used 1 inch elastic (non roll) so I pinned 1 1/2 inches over the elastic...Keep the elastic pushed against the fold of the fabric.

Sew your seam 1 1/4 inches from the edge...make sure you miss stitching the elastic.

I trimmed the extra material off.

Turn them right side out and you have yourself a pair of leg warmers! So easy!!

Farm Fresh Friday - Heritage apron

Mom  always wore an apron.

I can not longer use her apron...it is so worn... 

I don't think it can take much more laundering..

It had hand embroidery...that is beautiful!

The apron is made from flour sacks.

This year for my sisters birthdays...

I tried to re-create mom's apron

I'm not a fan of handwork...

so the embroidery is done with my machine...

My three sisters will have replica's of mom's apron..

Hopefully to pass onto their daughters.

Clothespin Bag

My clothespin bag had disintegrated. I had selvaged the holder for it.

I made up this little bag for the holder.

It works just great!

Weekend Project

It was a rainy weekend...so I tackled some sewing...

and whipped up a few aprons...

Easy half aprons made from re-cycled jeans!

This and That Things...

We are in a nice DEEP FREEZE! School's were cancelled today as the wind chill was to cold for children waiting for buses in the country, plus the propane doesn't fair to well in weather that is -40C and colder which is what we are having!

January 2nd of this year I started teaching a sewing class. It has been almost a year since I last taught. (I did a post at the beginning of my Blogging Life...on The Sewing Studio if you are interested you can check it out). This coming Monday will be the students last lesson and then we plan on seeking warmer weather for the rest of the winter!

I must of had an interest in sewing at an early age.

This box is mine....

 And here is the sewing machine.
I don't know how often I used it as a little girl...
I think it's worn because of the age of it...not because I used it a lot:)

I have a few other 'vintage' things in my sewing classroom...

Serger Quilt

This weekend I finished a double Serger Quilt. 

They are a quick and easy quilt to do...

You serge each piece, top, backing and batting all at once..

so when the front is finished...

The back is finished as well.

Since they are serged it is hard to keep them square..

It is difficult to make them bigger than a full size
as it is a lot of fabric to handle in the serger...

but if you want a quilt fast... (you can easily make one in 2 days)

It's a great way to make a smaller quilt!

Apron

I love aprons...and love to sew them!

This apron has a contrast lining that matches the ruffles and ties.

The ties on this one are a bit different than most aprons. 

It is a comfortable apron to wear!

Do you Remember . . .

Do you remember Holly Hobbies?.... 

Well I found a doll dress that I must of cut out 30 some years ago, from material dresses were made for my little girls.

I thought it was now or never to sew up the doll dress.

So it is now finished...after 30 some years....

It will fit the doll I made for Christmas for my granddaughter.

It has been years since I have knit.... 

My little granddaughter brought a Barbie doll the last time she visited. 

I sewed up a few outfits for the Barbie...then remembered I had this pattern....

Do you remember the first Barbie's?.... 

This picture looks like some of the very early ones....

and knitting Barbie clothes is much easier than sewing them....

And I forgot how much I enjoy knitting!

Middle of the night. .

After seeing 1:00 am, 2:00 am...

at 3:00 am I got to work. . .

By 4:00 am I was able to go to sleep.

Do you ever have nights like that?

Aprons- Heritage & New

I have an apron of my moms...

It has seen better days...but I remember mom...

always with an apron on. 

Maybe that's why I seem to always be sewing an apron.

I have been looking for Heirloom Lace to recreate this apron.

 I won't do the hand embroidery

(yes that is all hand embroidery...the material is an old flour sack!)

...my embroidery machine will have to suffice...

A few years back I did make my daughters and daughter-in-law a re-creation of this...

but I would like to do one for me and ummm.....maybe my sisters? 

Well see.....

Meanwhile I have picked up a few pieces of cloth for aprons.

My first with my new vintage patterns...

I enjoy sewing aprons...don't seem to wear them much...

but they make a nice shower gift or hostess gift.
