San Antonio

I have wanted to visit San Antonio for years! 

And here we are....A city filled with history!

You have to visit the Alamo!

This was a Mission built in the 1700's. In the 1800's it became know as El Alamo...the Spanish word for the nearby cottonwood trees . 

The Alamo became the symbol of Texas' struggle for independence in 1836.

The River walk....

one of the main reasons I wanted to come to San Antonio...

It was planned and built because of the floods in 1921. 

Over the years it has evolved into what it is today.

A beautiful place to stroll and shop if you wish!

The Villita... 

It was San Antonio's first neighbourhood, a settlement of primitive huts near the Alamo. 

19th Century immigrants created a pleasant mishmash of architectural styles that are used today as an art community...

Market Square is the historical center and heart of the city's Mexican culture.  

Lots of shops, food and cultural events.

Before we left...we had to eat right beside the Riverwalk!

This is just a few of the things to see....you could spend days visiting, shopping and eating here!!

Texas

 Our first stop was in Hill Country about half way through Texas!

It was nice to get off the Freeway and travel a back road to Fredericksburg.

 

It is a quaint town with lots of character buildings.

 They have lots of neat little shops,,,, it has been years since I have seen a 5-10-25 cent store:).... 

We had breakfast at a German Cafe... I had to have German Pancakes!

 

It definitely would be nice to visit this area in the spring...when the Bluebonnets are blooming!!

 New Mexico....

  We left the warmth for rain and a truck filled highway

But life is good!

Road Trip

One of the goals hubby and I have is to visit every state and province.  The time has come to cross a few states off our list!

The bikes are packed...

The van is ready.... 

Come along for the ride and we'll see how many more states we can fill in on our map!!

Packaged in the Field

Biking around Yuma we are still in awe of the Vegetable Fields we see!....When we come across a harvest...the smell of fresh vegetables is delicious!!

I never realized...that the lettuce is packaged and readied for delivery trucks right in the field!

After taking a few pictures...I turned around... Hubby had been given a couple packages of lettuce from the field!

So tonight the boxes packaged in the field today will be traveling to stores throughout the country...

When and pick up some lettuce at the grocery store.....chances are it was packaged...right in the field it grew!!

For supper we enjoyed a Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato Salad..... with FRESH lettuce straight from the field!!

Gathering of the Gunfighters

This weekend we attended the 'Gathering of the Gunfighters' held at the Yuma Territorial Jail. 

It was a fun event....lots of Western dress...

There was a number of groups competing.... They perform a 'skit' that ends in a gunfight ....each group is judged and on the last day awards are given out for the best performance.

This was all new to us....we never realized that these groups travel a circuit competing throughout the country!
It was a fun experience.

We had visited the Jail a few years back and walked through it once again.

From the guard house you could see the river valley... a beautiful winter view!

Laughlin Nevada

We visited Laughlin for the first time in 2008. We stayed in Bullhead AZ. The two cities are only separated by the Colorado River. We would walk or bike to Laughlin and enjoyed walking the Riverwalk in front of the Casino's. We enjoyed shopping at the Outlets Stores there as well.

This last trip south, we needed some down time, before getting to our 'home' so we stopped AVI Resort about 11 miles south of Laughlin.

We found that it is a wonderful place to just sit and relax!.

 It is situated along the Colorado... you can fish, rent  boats...take boat trips on the river

Enjoy the private beach with white sand!

On the other side of the river is Fort Mohave if you want to do some shopping!

They have a Hotel, RV Park, Golf Course...and a Casino besides the water fun!!
It was a great place to discover.
