On February 4th, 2013....pennies in Canada stopped being used. I knew it was happening...but I was down south...it didn't affect me.
I have been home for a week and a half...and been shopping a few times. If the bill comes to $8.68 and I give them $10.00... I get $1.30 back...They tell me if it was $8.67... I would get $1.35 back... Okay so we are just talking pennies... but I happen to like pennies.
I understand the reasons they quit making the penny... but I have a hard time with change...
I do have a couple piggy banks of pennies...that will probably be left behind to whoever takes them when we are gone.... Maybe they will be unique coins ....'old' coins used in the olden days to those who inherit them.
It seems Canada likes change....
Our $1.00 bills...
In 1987 turned into "Loonies"???...really Loonies???
Our $2.00 bills.....
In 1996 urned into "Twoonies"???
Okay Loonies and Twoonies... is it just me...or are those names 'different'?
Well anyways....that's my 2 cents worth on that topic...
If you want... I'll give you a penny for your thoughts!
A Canadian one at that!

we're probably gonna lose our penny soon, too. i understand, too, but don't like it.
ReplyDeleteI call it highway robbery! :(
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't like it either....
ReplyDeleteI understand that it costs more to mint the pennies than they are worth, but they are sure handy little coins.
ReplyDeleteI remember going to the candy store with a few pennies and getting a sack of candy. Those days are gone, too. Sigh!
I know or have heard that is coming - but I do NOT want to change! Change is hard. sandie
ReplyDeleteLOL right not only with inflation but the fact that Canada is no longer producing the penny, it's no longer a penny for your thoughts!
ReplyDeleteSo you're home now? I'm going to have to back up and browse through your posts later tonight or tomorrow, I'm not unpacked from my get away just yet and best get on that. I sort of got sidetracked. :-)
Have a wonderful day!
interesting....i didn't know!!
ReplyDeleteThey got rid of minor coins in Sweden years ago. After Canada did it, the U.S. is thinking about it. I think you will get used to it in no time.
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't live there but I must say that I like the bills better than the coins and just wish government would stop messing with things.
ReplyDeleteChange is difficult - at best! How are you doing back at home? Hope it warms up for you. Has anyone complimented you on your lovely tan?
ReplyDeleteGreat post! They want to get rid of our pennies, too, and I think that would be such a huge mistake. It seems like it doesn't work well there either. You can still spend those Canadian pennies here in the states next time you come back, though! :-)
ReplyDeleteI like the loonies (because the bird on the 'tail' is a Canadian loon) and twoonies. I put them in my change bottle and it adds up really fast. I hate the wads of one dollar bills that bust my wallet in the states. I don't miss the penny. I have lots of nickles now. We can still turn the pennies into the bank and get 'real' money for them.
