We were visiting a Nature Centre and this huge bird flew past us...when I found where he went....
I was amazed as I had never seen a woodpecker this big...just the little guys around our home.
My grandson who was with me, informed me it was a Pileated Woodpecker...
Hmmph.... what kids don't teach you...
He's a beauty!
ReplyDeletei miss seeing these guys. saw them in Wisconsin in my youth, but not here in Texas. :)
ReplyDeleteI used to see them on my property in Georgia a few years back. They are awesome. I recall one funny event---a Blue Jay, no small bird himself, was occupying a branch when a Great Pileated Woodpecker landed next to him. They looked at each other, neither wanting to surrender his perch to the other. Finally, the Jay flew off. Smart move. The beak on that 'Pecker is somethin' to be skeered of.
ReplyDeleteWe saw a big one like that on a hike last year and the kids and I couldn't take our eyes off of him - he was so HUGE!...and doing some serious damage to the tree.
ReplyDeleteThey are huge... I could not believe it! I can believe they could do major damage...and I could not quit looking at it either!
ReplyDeleteoooohhhh so exciting!!! i have never seen this one!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, that first shot is as stunning as the bird is!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and tell me - how do kids know all this?
ReplyDeleteHe does look big. I have never seen one here in Nebraska. I would love to, though!
ReplyDeletewow now that is a big woodpecker....kids are so smart..
ReplyDeleteMagnificent photos! They visit the woods behind our home every once in a while...a real treat!
ReplyDeleteWow...now that fellow can make a hole!
ReplyDeleteThey are a fascinating bird! i once had one walking around on our kitchen counter at our cottage. He was damaged in a storm. They are big, and this one was very gentle.
